Who Can Enter?

Each entry may consist of one shooter and one spotter. A shooter may also enter solo; a partner or spotter is not required in order to enter the jackpot. A shooter/spotter may also switch responsibilities and enter as a new team.

The Targets & the Distance

The targets are AR500 steel silhouette targets. Target size changes depending on range. All target locations will be identified.

Targets between 250-350 yards are 7”wx14”l (A and B).

Targets between 375-950 yards are 12”wx20”l (C-H)

Targets between 1000-1250 yards are 18”wx30”l (I-K)

The targets will be at unspecified distances. The targets will be labeled A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H,I,J,K. Targets A-E will be inside of 500 yards. Targets F-H will be between 600 to 950 yards. Targets I,J, and K are at 1250 yards.

Stages, Time, and Shooting Positions

The jackpot will be broken down into several different scenario based stages. A stage will require the contestant to make two-three target engagements. Each stage will be 2-3 minutes long depending on stage difficulty. The stage may require you to shoot from different positions in the same stage, all while on the clock.

Example: “Shoot target ‘A’ from the rock on the left and then shoot target ‘B’ from the rock on the right. You have two minutes to complete the stage.”

Shooting positions can range from shooting from the prone to shooting off a barricade, a rock, or other obstacles and unstable platforms. The positions will, at times, challenge your ability to manipulate your gear and to build a stable platform.

Draw order and Environmentals

The shooting order will be drawn at random before the competition begins. The randomness is required because the last shooter from each stage will most likely have the advantage of watching those that went before.

The elements are a huge part of the challenge, particularly wind, and these elements can change between shooters during a single stage. This will be part of the luck of the draw.  The only weather that will delay or stop the challenge is excessive rain, fog or smoke (only if it obstructs the shooter’s view of the target). Heavy mist, heat, and wind will not delay or reschedule the jackpot.

The shooting position is at 2,600ft Elevation.

Competition Structure

Only one shooter/spotter team will be on the firing line and competing at a time. Each team will start in the staging area with gear in hand. Upon the match director's signal, the time will start and the team may enter the designated shooting area, build their shooting position, and begin the course of fire.

Walk-through and Preparation Period

There will be a group walk-through 30 minutes prior to the start of the jackpot. The match director will identify each target location, discuss the course of fire and answer any questions from the competitors. After the walk-through, competitors will have the opportunity to range targets, make wind readings, and discuss tactics with their team.

Course of Fire

The shooter/spotter team starts standing in the staging area with an open action, and tripods/bipods collapsed. The staging area is approximately 15 feet from the designated shooting position, no running or exercise will be required. All gear must be in hand, or stowed in a pack that the shooter or spotter is wearing. No equipment may be prestaged at the shooting position. If any competitor is aged or handicapped, reasonable accommodations will be made, as long as the integrity of the challenge remains intact. The shooter’s magazine may be loaded and inserted into the gun, but the action must remain open.

The course of fire will start when the judge signals to the shooter the following commands:

Judge: “Shooter Ready?”

Contestant: “Ready!”

Judge: “Stand by…”, Judge will activate the mechanical shot timer. The shot timer will beep signaling the start of the allotted time for the given stage.

Shooter/spotter team will then deploy their equipment and build their shooting position based on the stage directions. From there they will engage the targets based on the stage directions.

The judge will notify the shooter/spotter team when there is 1 minute remaining, 30 seconds remaining, and 10 seconds remaining.

The shot timer will beep notifying the shooter the time is up. Any shots taken during the beep will count for score. If it’s too close to tell. Tie goes to the shooter.

Scoring Points, Missed Targets and Make Up Shots

When a shot is taken, the judge will signal to the shooter/spotter team a hit target by announcing, “IMPACT!” If the shot misses the target, the judge will signal, “RE ENGAGE!”

There is only one re-engagement opportunity per target. If the second shot misses the judge will signal, “NEXT TARGET!” or “NEXT POSITION!” depending on the stage.

2 Points awarded for a first round impact

1 point awarded for a second round impact

The shooter/spotter team that accumulates the most points by the last stage will be the winner. Second most points is second place and so on.

Note: A stage will require a maximum of 2-3 engagements, meaning a minimum of 2-3 shots fired and a maximum of 4-6 shots to be fired (if each target was missed once and required a re-engagement). This was designed so that a barrel will not get too hot. If you’re concerned about excessive barrel heat don’t miss a lot I guess… it’s just an imperfect system.

What Counts as a Hit?

Contact anywhere on the steel target by a shooter's bullet in its initial flight will be considered a hit. Grazing hits off the edge of the steel will be ruled in favor of the shooter. Hits on the target t-post is as a MISS.

Competition Disqualification

  • Shooting 30+ feet off target/shooting unsafely (We have to account for all bullet impacts).
  • Negligent discharges due to unsafe rifle or shooter.
  • Violating any range safety/basic firearm safety rules.
  • Just being a jerk/poor sport.
